Coincidence or divine intervention?

Do you believe in coincidence or divine intervention?

Yesterday, I was meeting with a new client’s family in a rehab facility. We chatted in the lobby area before going to the wife’s room. When I was leaving, I heard singing in the dining area. It dawned on me that I had never heard group activity in this rehab before. It was very nice and made me smile. As I rounded the corner, the man leading the group saw me, became very animated and waved me over. At the same time, I realized that this man was a friend of mine from a completely different industry. We probably hadn’t seen each other in 18+ years. Did I mention that I was wearing a mask? I still cannot believe that he recognized me from so far away while wearing a mask! He sang a few more songs but then broke away for us to visit. At that moment, I didn’t know if he was a volunteer, a visitor or a rehab patient.

We went upstairs to a more quiet area. By that time, it became apparent that he was a patient. He was in an electric scooter with both feet wrapped in bandages It turns out he has had quite a lot of serious health issues as well as personal issues over the last 5 years and he was in this rehab recovering from a surgery which required an antibiotic infusion drip. He also had moved back to his home town over 70 miles away. We had a lovely visit, gossiped, shared stories, laughed and both felt like the time just melted away.

He is a retired professional designer and wanted to show me his room before I left. On the way, he made a point to show me all of the gorgeous holiday decorations he had put up in the open spaces. We got to his room and I couldn’t believe it. There were twinkle lights everywhere! It was like walking into a winter wonderland and not a room in a rehab unit. He had plants decorated with berry twigs that he secretly clipped from trees at the hospital. He had found a bunch of bur oak acorns outside and scattered them around. But the kicker? He had decorated his infusion pole with Christmas lights!

He wanted to see me out and on our way he said hello or something personal to every single employee we saw along the way. He knew everyone’s name and they all knew his. It didn’t matter if it was an RN, an aide, a food server or housekeeping staff. He had a nice word for everyone. Here was a man with serious health and personal issues and he was bringing joy to everyone around him. He not only gathered patients and families to sing but also found a piano playing patient. He asked the administration if he could have access to the decorations so he could brighten up the shared spaces utilizing his immense creative talents.
Wherever he goes, he brings light and smiles to others.
He certainly did for me. I hope he did for you, too.

So, I ask, was running into him just coincidence or divine intervention?
